How to create an email with a background agent

Requirements

You must have the Editor, Developer or Admin role to use background agents. If your organization uses custom roles, your role needs the Create Emails and Can create emails using background agents permissions.

This article shows you how to have an AI agent build a new email in the background, either from scratch or based on an existing email.

A background agent is a Build Agent that works on its own. You give it a prompt, and it builds the email while you get on with something else. It can do everything an agent can do in AI chat.

Create a new email with AI

1. Open the project you want to add the email to.
2. Click New email. If you can also create folders, click Create, then Email.
3. In Email name, enter a name for the email.
4. Choose the other settings for the email as usual. See How to create your first email.
5. Tick Create with AI.
6. In AI agent, choose the Build Agent to use.
7. In Prompt, describe the email you want, as you would in AI chat. For example: “A welcome email for new subscribers, with a hero image, three reasons to shop with us and a 10% discount code.”
8. Click Create.

Create a similar email with AI

To build a new email based on one you already have, for example this month’s version of a monthly newsletter:

1. In the project, click the three dots on the email you want to start from.
2. Select Create a similar email with AI.
3. In Name, enter a name for the new email.
4. In Prompt, describe what should be different. For example: “Update this for the June product releases at https://example.com/releases.”
5. In AI agent, choose the Build Agent to use.
6. Click Clone.

Check the email when it’s ready

The new email appears in the project with a Generating… badge while the agent works. You can’t open it until the agent has finished.

When the badge disappears, open the email and check it. You can then edit it yourself, or use AI chat to make more changes.
