How to connect OpenAI to EmailShepherd

Requirements

You must have the Admin role to connect an AI provider. If your organization uses custom roles, your role needs the Manage App Configuration permission.

This article shows you how to get an API key from OpenAI and connect it to EmailShepherd, so EmailShepherd’s AI features run on OpenAI models.

Your usage is billed directly by OpenAI on the account you connect, and doesn’t use your EmailShepherd AI credits. To learn which features use your provider, see How to connect your own AI provider.

Before you begin

You need an OpenAI account on the OpenAI Platform. Make sure billing is set up, so the key can be used.

Caution

A ChatGPT subscription, such as ChatGPT Plus, Business or Enterprise, doesn’t include an API key. API access is set up and billed separately.

Get an API key

1. Sign in to the OpenAI Platform.
2. Go to the API keys page and create a new key. Give it a name you’ll recognise, such as “EmailShepherd”.
3. Copy the key. OpenAI may only show it once.

Connect it to EmailShepherd

1. In the top-left of the sidebar, click your organization’s name, then select Organization settings.
2. Click AI Provider.
3. Select Use a custom AI Provider.
4. In Provider, select OpenAI.
5. In API Key, paste your key.
6. Under Model Configuration, choose a model for each task. See Choose your models.
7. Click Save Changes.

Check your usage

Usage on your key doesn’t appear in EmailShepherd. To see it, and what it costs, sign in to the OpenAI Platform and open its usage and billing pages.
